1 Introduction to ConversionTools 3.0
 
1.1 History
Font Converter and Deconverter are softwares used to convert Non-Unicode fonts to Unicode fonts and vice versa respectively. The Font Converter is used to convert Non-Unicode (Preeti, Himali, Jaga Himal, Kanchan, Kantipur) fonts to Unicode fonts (Kalimati, Kanjirowa, Madan, and Samanata) and the DeConverter is used to convert Unicode fonts to Non-Unicode font. The Font Converter and Deconverter are developed in Java (http://java.sun.com) and distributed as executable jar files. One needs to install JDK or JRE to use these softwares.
1.2 ConversionTools 3.0
Previously provided as two separate tools for the conversion process have been integrated into a single suite and hence given the name ConversionTools in this latest version. The version 3.0 has been given instead of 1.0 to coincide with the release of Nepalinux 3.0 (http://nepalinux.org). The users can now get a more accurate result as a slight upgrade has been made to the engine used for conversion process. Also the Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been enhanced dramatically and made more user-friendly. So now you can convert your document in shorter step!
 
2 What's new in ConversionTools 3.0?

The ConversionTools 3.0 now comes up with a totally new and sleek GUI while utmost priority has been given to make it much more user-friendly. Some of the attractive features of the application are:

  1. an integrated suite (Font Converter as well as DeConverter) for conversion

  2. support for “Drag and Drop” functionality

  3. visually enticing and user-friendly GUI (Menu bar and Tool bar)

  4. support for multiple conversion (one or more files can be converted at a time)

  5. increase in the accuracy of the conversion engine

  6. improved functionality

3 How to use ConversionTools 3.0?
 
3.1 System Requirements
The utmost requirement for running the ConversionTools is the prior installation of JRE/JDK. The ConversionTools has been developed in Java and distributed as an executable jar file and thus to run the jar file JRE (includes the Java Virtual Machine (JVM)) is required.
3.1.1 How do I know whether Java is installed in my machine?
To know if your machine has Java already follow the following process:
    1. Open the terminal
    2. Type java and press enter

    3. If you get the following screen then java is installed in your machine

3.1.2 Where do I get JRE/JDK?
You can download the latest version of JRE/ JDK at Sun's site. The URL has been given below:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Go to download section and choose the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 (as of the day of preparing this manual) and click on download button.
3.2 Installing the JRE
    1.Select the platform as Windows/ Windows64 or Linux/ Linux64 as per your system architecture
    2.Select multi language
    3.Accept the license for next page to be displayed.
    4.Then click on the link that says Windows Offline Installation to download the installation file.
    5.Perform the installation as per the instruction given in the site or refer:

3.3 Using the Conversion Tool
 
3.1.1 Running the Conversion Tool
You can get the ConversionTools in OpenCD or download it from the site of Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (http://madanpuraskar.org). It is provided as a zipped folder. Once the ConversionTools3.0.zip has been obtained please precede as below as per your platform:
Windows Platform:
    1.Unzip the zip file. The folder ConversionTools3.0 includes an executable jar file named ConversionTools3.0 and help file.
    2.Click/Double-Click on a file named ConversionTools3.0. You will be able to see the following screen.

Linux Platform:
    1.Unzip the zip file. The folder ConversionTools3.0 includes an executable jar file named ConversionTools3.0 and help file.
    2.Open the terminal and change the directory to that of the ConversionTools3.0 (assuming you have unzipped the folder in your Desktop; your terminal should look something like this:

    3.now issue the command java -jar ConversionTools3.0 and see the screen as figure below:

3.3.3 Using FontToUnicode Converter (Font Converter)
You can invoke the FontToUnicode Converter dialog by following any one of these methods:
    1.Open the FontToUnicode dialog
    - Select FontToUnicode from the Tools menu(Tools>FontToUnicode) (OR)
    - Press Ctrl+u (OR)
    - Click on the FontToUnicode button ftu
    You'll be able to see:

    2.Now locate the file that needs to be converted to Unicode. It can be done by either of the following ways:
    - Press the browse button and locate the file[.txt] (OR)
    - Drag and drop one or more file(s) [.txt] into the input File box.

    Note: Please provide file with only ?txt? extension.

    2.Choose the proper Input Encoding (ISO-8859-1 or ISO-8859-15)
    3.Choose the proper Input Font (Preeti, Kanchan, Kantipur, Himali, Jaga Himal)
    4.Choose the proper Output Encoding(UTF-8 or UTF-16)
    5.Press enter of click on the Convert button. (If file with extension other than ?txt? are passed user are notified for invalid file.)
    6.If all is well then the progress bar displays the status accordingly. For multiple file each the a file is converted the users are notified of the same. Sometimes is is usual to see the progress bar indicate 99% even if the conversion process is complete. In case of any error users are notified through proper message.

    8.Find the converted file.(If you had selected a file named mytext.txt then the converted file is named as mytext_unicode.txt in the same location as that of the original file.
    Caution: In case the same file is provided for conversion multiple times the last file will be overwritten without any notification to the user.
3.3.4 Using UnicodeToFont Converter (Deconverter)
You can invoke the UnicodeToFont Converter dialog by following any one of these methods:
    1.Open the UnicodeToFont dialog
    - Select FontToUnicode from the Tools menu(Tools>UnicodeToFont) (OR)
    - Press Ctrl+f (OR)
    - Click on the UnicodeToFont button ftu

    2.Now locate the file that needs to be converted to Unicode. It can be done by either of the following ways:

    - Drag and drop one or more file(s) [.txt] into the input File box.:

    5.Click on the Convert button. (If file with extension other than ?txt? are passed user are notified for invalid file.)

3.3.5 Change Thenme
You can change the theme of the application through the following steps:
    1.Open the Theme Select dialog box:
    - Select Change Theme from the Tools menu (Tools>Change Theme)
    - Press Ctrl+t (OR)
    - Press the Change Theme button
    You'll be able to see:

    2.Select a proper theme. (Users are also shown preview of the theme as they select a particular theme.
    3.Press OK button.
3 Exiting from the application

Please follow any of these methods to exit from the application:
- Select Exit from the File menu (File>Exit)
- Press the exit button ftu
